So I promised y'all pictures from my trip to Mount St. Helens last week. I always follow through, even if it takes me a few days. Or a week. Whatever.
I'd never been up to the mountain in the spring before. I've always gone towards the end of summer, so there was literally no snow anywhere save the glacier in the crater. It was like a whole different world up there in late spring. There were still several areas that were snowbound and inaccessible, but for the most part things were cleared up nicely.
Here's a sample of what the highway leading up to the mountain looked like at a higher elevation:

The DOT had done a shit-ton of work getting the road cleared.
Our first view of the mountain, from the Visitor Center:

And a few more, taken from various points along the way:

Needless to say, all that snow was quite melty in the sun and warmth. It was probably somewhere between 70 and 80 that day. Melty snow = waterfalls:

Of course, that pales in comparison to the kind of snowmelt and mudflow action that happened 28 years prior. And just think, this is after nearly 3 decades of erosion, plant growth, and the like:

As I'd said before, I didn't go alone. I scooped up the ex:

And our 16 year old foster daughter:

There was supposed to be a solo shot of me and my mountain, but for some reason it didn't save in the camera. *sadness* Oh well, family shots ahoy!

And lest there be any doubt as to the amount of snow left in the area:

Somebody was trying to be clever and shove snow in my shirt as the picture was being taken. I wasn't having it:

The dome building eruption that began in October 2004 stopped in January. The amount of lava deposited on the crater floor in 3 1/2 years rivals the amount that created the old 1980-1986 dome. The two combined:

Okay, there was probably a dose of tl;dr in there too. Be happy I didn't include a thesis-worthy dissection of the 1980 eruption, its effects, and a list of the names of the victims. :P
